“The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.”

“The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is at last to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.”

(Gilbert K. Chesterton)

“A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.”

(Lao Tzu)

“Don’t listen to what they say. Go see.”

(Chinese proverb)

Whether you are a family member or a friend, or you just happened to find the journal while browsing, welcome.

Take a moment to read about what the Texas Lutheran University DRAM 379 – The Arts and Culture in Central Europe class is doing, experiencing – how we are growing, transforming. (Visit the TLU Website – Link will open a new page)

379 begins in the spring semester with approximately nine orientation sessions during which we watch Czech and Polish films and explore the rich history and culture of Central Europe.

From 26 May until 23 June we will be living in Central Europe and trying to blend in as best as possible. Prague will serve as our home base. We will begin exploring as soon as we touch down and the exploration will continue almost non-stop until we leave. We will see theatre, listen to music, study architecture and, best of all, have fun visiting one of the most vibrant and historically significant regions of the world.

Our longest excursion takes us via an overnight train to Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland. While there, we will tour Auschwitz-Birkenau, located about seventy kilometers west of Krakow in Oświęcim.

A visit to Olomouc, the traditional capitol of Moravia, is on our itinerary. We will also see numerous other places in Central Europe – each a capital in its own way.

We will make regular journal entries that will give our own perspectives about sights seen, places visited, people met, foods eaten, and, of course, our personal thoughts. We will also post pictures and travel vlogs which will provide a taste of our experiences. Don’t forget to leave a comment when you visit.

With the quotes above in mind, we set out on the adventure 26 May, so check in on us often. We are:

Darren Bunte

Sarah Flores

B.K. Kirkpactrick-McKee

Carrie Strowd

Eve Yanta

and

Terry “Seatbelt” Price (AKA, The Leader)
